The Tower of Babel

Notes

This translation was done kind of quickly and back when I hadn't worked too much on Osrican grammar, the syntax I used actually reflects an informal register of the language, which is not very fitting for a bible story.

The text is also written in a more modern style, so it does not use fancy vocabulary or grammar.

Osrican

1Jα γχαιλ ερψυ ζρακ ζαμë τυγγυ, ȷα ζαμι ρατζου. 2Jα γα, μιψι wαρυγγυ α αυσρë βιγχȷετυν αγρου ιν Σëναρι γρυνδυ, ȷα ψɑρ βυδëδυν.

Rough word-for-word translation

1and entire earth spoke same language, and same words. 2and it-happened, amid the-journeying from east they-found a-field in Shinar’s territory, and there they-dwelt.

3and their to-the-neighbors they-said: “gather, bricks let’s make, will they-burn” and bricks for stone and asphalt for mortar they-made. 4and they-said: “gather, a-city let’s build and a-tower with a-summit that goes to-heaven, and let’s be known lest across whole earth we-are separated.

5and the-Lord descended for the-city and the-tower see, that men’s children built. 6and the-Lord said: “look, one populace they-are, and one language they-speak, and this is only their work’s beginning, and nothing will limited them be. 7gather, let’s descend and their language confuse, then they will their neighbor’s speech not understand”.

8and the-Lord divided them from there across the-whole earth, and the-city’s construction they-stopped. 9this is why Babel it-was called, because the-Lord confused (balal) the-whole earth’s language, and the-Lord divided them from there across the-whole earth.

English translation (NRSV)

1 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2 And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and fire them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone and bitumen for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”

5 The LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. 6 And the LORD said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore it was called Babel, because there the LORD confused (balal) the language of all the earth, and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
